Honley Cricket Club

Village cricket is the epitome of an English summer, and Honley Cricket Club is your quintessential village cricket club. Far End Lane has been home to Honley Cricket Club since Queen Victoria was on the throne. While the club’s history might be considered ancient, their approach to the sport of cricket, and the community is most definitely progressive.

The club has a first and second team playing in the Huddersfield League and boasts a thriving Junior section, which welcomes boys and girls of all abilities.

Over the years, Honley Cricket Club has won a string of awards. From 2005-2008 they won the League title for a record-breaking 4 consecutive years making them one of the most successful clubs in the League’s history.

Players of all standards

Through the decades, the club has fielded county and international-standard players, but welcomes players of all abilities.

On Friday evenings during the summer months, the field is teeming with young cricketers – both male and female – honing their skills and, importantly, having fun. It can be a relaxing evening for parents too, as the bar is always open!

Children must have started school to join, but once they’re old enough, there are plenty of opportunities for them to get a game. Honley has teams in all age groups from U7s through to seniors, so if you can ball the length of a wicket and hold a bat, there’s a good chance you’ll be selected to play for a team, if you wish.

Honley is one of the more progressive clubs when it comes to encouraging women’s cricket. It’s one of the only clubs in the league to have a purpose-built female changing room and has brought through several talented female cricketers over the years.

Spectators welcome

Even if you don’t play cricket, you can still join Honley Cricket Club. Membership isn’t compulsory – you can pay on the gate to watch Honley play – but it does offer some welcome benefits. You get free entry to home league matches and a points card for the bar, which can be redeemed for free drinks.

An engaging venue

The pavilion and changing rooms have extended over the years and, thanks to various funding bodies and donations, in 2016 the  club’s crumbling, 19th century pavilion was saved and completely renovated. Another extension was added to provide accessible ground floor changing rooms for men and women and the bar area refurbished.

Available to hire for most parties and special events, the bar area can hold up to a 100 people quite comfortably, and if the weather is nice there’s plenty of outdoor space too. Due to matches, availability during the summer months is limited, so it’s wise to contact the club in plenty of time, to see if they can accommodate your celebration.
